When Apple Inc. unveils new products Tuesday, one of the tech industry’s most anticipated events of the year, it will have Mayo Clinic at its side to encourage people to use smartphones, and possibly a smartwatch, to monitor health.
The combination of Rochester-based Mayo, one of the best-known names in health care, and Apple could be a major boost to the practice of routinely tracking health conditions and fitness performance.
The products Apple unveils at noon Minnesota time will come with a new app, Health, that holds data collected either by the gadgets or entered by a user. Mayo will show data from the Health app can flow into the more sophisticated management system of a major health center. The two companies have been working together for about two years.

San Francisco consumer electronics device maker Jawbone will announce this week that it will be opening up access to its Up app software that will allow it to be used on other smartphones, watches and wearables.
That includes the new health-focused wearable that Apple is expected to introduce this week, as well as Google Android Wear devices and Microsoft’s Windows Phone. It also means its software will be able to suck in data garnered from rival devices like Fitbit and render it on Jawbone’s app.
The move is obviously aimed at proliferating its software beyond its own Up band, trying to turn it into a platform. In addition, Jawbone will allow device makers to make their own products that communicate directly with the Up system via an open protocol, without being required to make a companion app.

Mój Jawbone UP24 wytrzymywał około siedmiu-ośmiu dni na jednym ładowaniu. Od dzisiaj będzie potrafił wytrzymać, rzekomo, 14 dni… Haczyk leży w uaktualnieniu firmware’u i siłą rzeczy nie jestem w stanie tego dzisiaj potwierdzić – dopiero uaktualniłem swojego UP24, więc pierwsze wyniki podam jak padnie. Jak to zrobić? Prosto!

With less than 24 hours to go, security precautions for Apple’s big press event Tuesday have been taken to unprecedented levels.
Apple has wired the entire event auditorium — the Flint Center for the Performing Arts — with a brand new, state-of-the-art security system to lock down access and prevent leaks.
The auditorium is crawling with 24-hour security personnel. Anyone working at the massive show, from caterers to construction staff and technicians, is required to submit their phones to Apple’s security team. The phones’ cameras are being covered in special tamper-proof tape, which changes color if removal is attempted.
“If it changes color, we’ll be fired on the spot,” said one person who is working at the show but asked to remain anonymous.

Nieoficjalnie dowiedziałem się dzisiaj, że iPhone 6 nie trafi do Polski w pierwszej turze. Powinno zatem wszystko wyglądać tradycyjnie jak przy wszystkich wcześniejszych premierach – otrzymamy go z lekkim opóźnieniem. Jak bardzo? Nie ma tragedii…

While the outside is a good expression of what a smartwatch should be, the inside is fatally flawed. Motorola inexplicably chose an ancient 1GHz single-core Texas Instruments OMAP 3 SoC to power the 360. For some perspective, that’s a 2010-era processor in the same league as the iPhone 4 or Nexus One. Smartwatch processors don’t need to be as powerful as their smartphone companions, but there is no reason for them to be old. It’s almost as if Motorola raided a dumpster outside the TI factory for parts.
Typically OMAP 3s were built on a 45nm, which puts it at a huge power-usage disadvantage compared to the 28nm LP (low power) process used to make the Snapdragon 400 in every other smartwatch.
Regardless of the specific technical information, the SoC selection completely cripples the Moto 360. The device is slow and the battery life is not up to par. Scrolling performance is nowhere near as smooth as the Snapdragon 400-powered G Watch or Gear Live, and the device often freezes or stutters.
Tego produktu w ogóle nie powinno być na rynku – mogli go zostawić jako prototyp to miałbym jeszcze jakiś szacunek do nich. Dopóki wszelkiej maści wearables nie otrzymają dedykowanych SoC, które pobierają mikroskopijne ilości prądu, to nie ma to większego sensu. Problem w tym, że nie warto inwestować w taki jeśli nie będzie się sprzedawał w odpowiednich ilościach… i kółko się zamyka.
Może jutrzejsze dzień coś zmieni w tym względzie…

We may finally have a reason for why Apple Stores and some other stores are installing new NFC payment hardware ahead of the iPhone 6 launch. Apple is reportedly planning on implementing a security feature called tokenzation in the system, which removes the necessity to transmit account numbers or other critical personal details wirelessly (via Bank Innovation).
This tokenization system employs secure codes become useless after being used once. That boosts security by ensuring that any information captured by nefarious third-parties doesn’t give them access to your account or money. However, not all NFC payment terminals can accept this type of payment.

Możliwość stosowania split-view controllers w poziomym ustawieniu może potencjalnie być ciekawe dla produktywności. Musimy jednak pamiętać, że iPhone nadal ma ekran 16:9, a przy takich proporcjach klawiatura zajmuje znacznie więcej ekranu niż przy 4:3 w iPadzie. Może to być jednak funkcja zachęcająca ludzi do kupienia jednego urządzenia zamiast małego iPhone’a i iPada mini.

Dell yesterday unveiled its new $2500 27-inch 5K monitor (UP2715K) that boasts an impressive 5120 x 2880 resolution at 218 pixels per inch. This ultra-high resolution places the monitor on par with Apple’s Retina MacBook Pro, which has a pixel density of 220 pixels per inch, and would be the equivalent of a Retina 27-inch iMac or Apple Thunderbolt Display.
Taka rozdzielczość pozwoli na zastąpienie jednego punktu na ekranie 2560×1440 dokładnie czterema pikselami. To @2x dla iMaków i być może dla jakiegoś nowego Apple Thunderbolt Display powinno pojawić się w przyszłym roku. Pytanie tylko czy Apple najpierw nie zabawi chwili na 4K, bo wydajność układów graficznych będzie stała pod ogromnym znakiem zapytania.

Teraz, wypoczęci po urlopach, postanowiliśmy niejako powrócić do korzeni naszej zabawy i zrezygnować z ustalania tematów przeglądów. Feld & Volk says the rear camera does indeed appear to include optical image stabilization (OIS), as the camera assembly has some freedom to float within its module. Rumors have differed on whether the iPhone 6 will include OIS and if so, whether both the 4.7-inch and 5.5-inch models will support it.

According to several sources, Apple has already begun flexing its supply chain muscles by shipping so many units of upcoming devices from its manufacturing facilities to sales outlets that it is causing delays for other manufacturers.
Apple shipments via major concerns like FedEx and UPS are said to be ‘incredibly high’ for the holiday quarter, pointing to a massive number of iPhones and whatever other units Apple announces for the fall season incoming. The company is apparently flooding its channels with devices, causing shipments for other ‘top tier’ device makers to be delayed to make way for Apple products.
One other manufacturer was reportedly told by shippers that they couldn’t meet some deadlines because they were booked up servicing a ‘very important customer’.

Apple’s upcoming wearable device, based on iOS, will run third-party applications and, furthermore, may come equipped with an App Store, according to two sources with knowledge of the new device. It is currently unclear if the App Store will be full-fledged, like on the iPhone and iPad, or if it will be a special section with in the iPhone App Store for apps that play nicely with the new wearable device.

Facebook is also said to be finishing up work on an iOS 8-optimized version of its iPhone app with improved notifications. Akurat aplikacja od Facebooka to ostatnia rzecz jaką chciałbym instalować (nie mam Facebooka na żadnym mobilny urządzeniu już), ale strasznie ciekawy jestem jak to urządzenie wykorzystają developerzy. Kwestią krytyczną będzie oczywiście praca na baterii, a ta rzekomo nie jest zbyt imponująca…

Niedawno pojawił się chiński film na YouTubie, na którym pewien pan prezentuje iPhone’a 6 lub coś co ma niego przypominać. Oglądałem go kilkukrotnie i najbardziej zaskakujące jest to, że wydaje się to być prawdziwy iPhone – zwróćcie uwagę na animacje, nie lagują jak w chińskich klonach. Przedstawiony model wydaje się być wersją z 4.7″ ekranem… zresztą zobaczcie to sami.
Apple’s wearable will be as much a fitness tracker as the iPhone turned out to be a widescreen iPod.

Ostatnio ujawniono wiele zdjęć celebrytów w internetach i jak to zwykle bywa, wokół tematu powstają już legendy i niedopowiedzenia. iCloud nie jest bezpieczny. Google Drive ma bugi. OneDrive wysyła wszystko do NSA. Należy zrezygnować z chmury natychmiast. Nie należy robić sobie zdjęć. Trzeba obrócić się dwukrotnie wokół własnej osi, skacząc na jednej nodze i przez lewie ramię sypnąć solą…
Równie dobrze możemy zrezygnować też z jazdy samochodem, latania samolotem, jeżdżenia rowerem, chodzenia na spacer i czołgania się po wódce — bo coś nam się może stać. Mamy jednak podstawową wiedzę na temat tego jak się zabezpieczać w życiu. Wiemy, że rower trzeba przypiąć kłódką, bo inaczej ukradną go nam. Samochodu nie zostawiamy otwartego i mamy w nim alarm, czasami z GPSem. Mieszkanie lub dom z kolei zamykamy na kilka zamków i być może nawet mamy monitoring z ochroną.
To może po prostu czas nauczyć się podstaw bezpieczeństwa w sieci?

Pojawiła się seria zdjęć, rzekomo działającego iPh0ne’a 6 4.7″, na stronach Weibo (via cnBeta). Na nich widać działający telefon wraz z tym jak wyglądałby iOS na większym ekranie… Być może John Gruber miał rację, a przeciek jaki usłyszał i przekazał dalej okaże się prawdziwy.
