Apple pobiera 15% od nadawców, aby być na Apple TV →

Apple didn’t extend its 30 percent policy to developers on its Apple TV platform. While Apple and its partners have never talked about it publicly, my understanding is that a handful of video services, including Netflix, Hulu Plus and pro-baseball’s MLB.TV, give Apple 15 percent of their monthly fees for any subscriber who signs up on Apple TV.

Z innych źródeł wynika, że to nie Apple jest odpowiedzialny za samą infrastrukturę dostarczania wideo do Apple TV i stąd może być niższa stawka. Dziwię się jednak trochę, że czegoś takiego nie oferują – pozwoliłoby to małym wydawcom odejść ze szpon YouTube’a, mieć alternatywną platformę dla swoich treści i nie martwić się o zajmowanie się całym backendem.

Nie zapomninajmy, że Apple Watch jest dostępny również w wersji stalowej. I ona robi wrażenie. Zegarek zaczyna prezentować się świetnie, szczególnie w połączeniu ze skórzaną opaską. 42-milimetrowa koperta leżała świetnie na mojej ręce, brasnoleta była przyjemna w dotyku. Nie jest to jednak skóra najwyższej próby i z pewnością fani tradycyjnych zegarków będą zawiedzeni.

Najciekawsze w Apple Watchu dotychczas jest to jak różne osoby zupełnie różnie odbierają opaski. Faktycznie piętnaście minut to niewiele, aby wyrobić sobie dobre zdanie na jakiś temat, ale mi skórzana przypadła do gustu, bo jest niezwykle komfortowa, w odróżnieniu od Milanese Loop. Do skóry też nie miałem zastrzeżeń.

Apple Watch rzeczywiście jest bardzo osobisty urządzeniem, również dlatego że każdy skrajnie inaczej go odbiera.

European Commission:

The European Commission has sent a Statement of Objections to Google alleging the company has abused its dominant position in the markets for general internet search services in the European Economic Area (EEA) by systematically favouring its own comparison shopping product in its general search results pages. The Commission’s preliminary view is that such conduct infringes EU antitrust rules because it stifles competition and harms consumers. Sending a Statement of Objections does not prejudge the outcome of the investigation.

The Commission has also formally opened a separate antitrust investigation into Google’s conduct as regards the mobile operating system Android. The investigation will focus on whether Google has entered into anti-competitive agreements or abused a possible dominant position in the field of operating systems, applications and services for smart mobile devices.

Google przegra. Dostanie karę. Zapłaci ją. Nawet tego nie zauważy. Nic się nie zmieni.

Nearly 15 years ago, I wrote my first review of Mac OS X for a nascent “PC enthusiast’s” website called Ars Technica. Nearly 15 years later, I wrote my last. Though Apple will presumably announce the next major version of OS X at WWDC this coming June, I won’t be reviewing it for Ars Technica or any other publication, including the website you’re reading now.

I’ve just escaped the Apple institution. I’ve sent in my resignation, and fled down its bright white corridors curated by crass colourful pictures of iPhones past. I handed in my security pass and in return I was able to re-claim my creativity, individuality and free thinking from the secure Apple cloak room.  Finally now, for the first time in two years, I feel light, creative and inspired. I am again an individual with my own creative ideas, perceptions, values and beliefs. It may take me a while, but from what I believe – I’m now able to express such beliefs again. I am no longer part of the collective  iCult machine whose dirty, worn-out, greasy and naive internal mechanisms of bullying, harassment and mind-games push out shiny and polished iPhones every year.

Biorąc pod uwagę jak bardzo poważnie w USA podchodzi się do tematu mobbingu i jak dużo jest do „ugrania” w tym temacie pod względem finansowym, to nie chce mi się wierzyć, że człowiek opisujący tę historię jest do końca obiektywny. Jeśli to co mówi jest prawdą to ma materiał na sporą wypłatę… tyle, że zrobił ogromny błąd opisując ją.

The first research apps developed using ResearchKit study asthma, breast cancer, cardiovascular disease, diabetes and Parkinson’s disease, and have enrolled over 60,000 iPhone® users in just the first few weeks of being available on the App Store™.* Starting today, medical researchers all over the world will be able to use ResearchKit to develop their own apps and developers can also contribute new research modules to the open source framework.

The open source framework allows any medical researcher to take advantage of the initial modules in ResearchKit to study health and wellness and better understand disease. Developers can also build new modules based on the open source code and contribute them to ResearchKit. The initial customizable modules address the most common elements found in research studies—participant consent, surveys and active tasks.

Android Wear zjada Apple Watcha na śniadanie →

Powiedzmy sobie szczerze – pierwszy lepszy zegarek z Androidem Wear zjada Apple Watcha na śniadanie. Mam tutaj na myśli nie tylko parametry czy czas pracy na baterii, ale również (a może przede wszystkim) design.

Powiedzmy sobie szczerze – Android Wear nie oferuje absolutnie niczego co jest niezbędne do życia. Jedyna funkcja, która dla wielu osób jest istotna to Google Fit, który jest porażką na całej linii. Apple Watch podobnie nie oferuje rzeczy niezbędnych do codziennych czynności, ale przynajmniej funkcje fitnessowe w połączeniu z Apple Health działają tak jak powinny – otrzymujemy centralne otwarte repozytorium, do którego ma dostęp każda aplikacja trzecia wykorzystująca Health. Do tego dochodzi genialny Handoff…

A co do designu… widziałem większość smartzegarków na rynku i żaden z nich nie umywa się konstrukcją do Apple Watcha. Co prawda żaden z nich nie umywa się do dobrych i drogich (znacznie droższych; poza Edition) zegarków mechanicznych, ale muszę Apple przyznać, że obróbkę materiałów opanowali do perfekcji. A same paski zrobiły na mnie ogromne wrażenie, czego się zupełnie nie spodziewałem.

iOS 8.4 beta 1 →

Pojawiła się dziś nowa wersja iOS 8.4 beta 1 build 12H4074d. Na razie jest to tylko developerska wersja z tego co widzę. Główna zmiana to zupełnie nowa aplikacja Muzyka. Aplikacja jest teraz bardziej płaska i pełna półprzeźroczystości znanych chociażby z OS X 10.10. Wydaje się być na pierwszy rzut oka bardzo przejrzysta i prostsza w obsłudze niż wersja poprzednia. Bardzo fajną rozwiązaniem jest MiniPlayer dzięki któremu możemy widzieć ciągle u dołu ekranu co jest odtwarzane, a jednocześnie przeglądać naszą bibliotekę. Jeśli jednak szukacie śladów systemu streamingowego od Apple to się zwiedziecie – nic takiego nie widać, choć w dolnym pasku jest sporo miejsca na jego ikonę.

Ciekawa jest zmiana podejścia Apple w kwestii rozwoju iOS-a – zamiast dużych update’ów „na hurra!” robią mniejsze i dłużej je testują. Zobaczymy czy ta nowa polityka utrzyma się w kolejnych wersjach systemu, ale podoba mi się takie podejście jako reakcja na problemy z bugami raportowanymi przez ostatnie dwa lata.

Manfrotto Digital Director dla iPada Air do sterowania DSLR →

Manfrotto has used the National Association of Broadcasters (NAB) show as launching pad for the Digital Director, a bracket designed to turn an iPad Air into an external monitor for Canon and Nikon DSLRs. By connecting the Digital Director to a camera via USB and opening the app of the same name, a Live View feed is provided and exposure settings along with focus point can be controlled by the iPad. The rig offers a Lightning Connector for the iPad and a CPU aids communication between the tablet and the camera.

In addition to shooting controls, the Digital Director also makes it possible to download images post-capture to the connected iPad and check high-resolution images. Some basic editing functions are available such as cropping and adjusting brightness, and photos can be shared from the app to FTP or social networks. The Digital Director will be available in June for $499.99.

To ma ogromny potencjał jeśli będzie odpowiednio dopracowane.

Apple received almost one million US watch pre-orders on Friday, April 10, its first day of accepting orders, according to Slice’s projections, based on receipts from 9,080 online shoppers.

Przy okazji firma określiła które modele były najpopularniejsze i które paski najcześciej wybierane – wyniki pokrywają się w większości z ankietami, które widziałem, w tym również w Polsce.
